December 14, 2009 - Valve has unveiled the first of many expansion packs for Left 4 Dead 2.

Titled "The Passing," this new downloadable add-on will see the original Left 4 Dead survivors, Francis, Bill, Zoey, and Louis, crossing paths with the current L4D2 cast.

This new campaign takes place after the Dead Center mission in Left 4 Dead 2, and packs plenty of new singleplayer, mutliplayer, and co-op features.

"The Passing" includes new arenas for Survival, Versus and Scavenge mode, as well as introducing a new "co-operative challenge mode of play." Also included is a new "uncommon common" zombie class, melee weapon, and firearm.

"The Passing will become the most important campaign in the Left 4 Dead story, as all the Survivors are being called together in one campaign," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "It will also be a huge offering of new gameplay content, with something new for every game mode plus a new uncommon common and weaponry."

No price or release details were given, but Valve said it's targeting an "early spring" launch. Will we be able to take control of the old survivors? Valve wasn't clear. Perhaps this is what the new co-op challenge mode will be.

December 4, 2009 - If world conflicts were settled by the number of players actively participating in Call of Duty, Activision would probably be the most dominate force on the planet.

But unfortunately for them, wars are not settled that way.

The company has revealed more than eight million gamers have played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 during the first week of its release.

By comparison, that outnumbers the world's top-five armed forces combined, as the publisher points out below:

More than twice the number of troops in NATO's 28 member countries combined (3.9 million active troops in NATO)

More than three times the number of troops in the world's largest army (People's Liberation Army of China with 2.3 million)

More than five times the number of active duty military personnel currently serving in the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force combined (1.4 million)

More than six times the size of India's Armed Forces (1.3 million)

More than seven times the size of North Korea's Korean People's Army (1.1 million)

And, eight times the size of personnel in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (1 million)

Seagate just announced their first line of SSDs, named Pulsar. It's a 2.5-inch drive in slightly odd 50GB, 100GB and 200GB sizes, and it looks ready to compete with the current SSD leaders.

The Pulsar drives are all 3Gb/s SATA compatible, offering top read/write speeds of 240MB/s and 220MB/s, respectively. For comparison, the current market champ, Intel's X25-M, hits 250MB/s read but only 100MB/s write, and the X25-M tops out at 160GB capacity. These new Seagate drives have a lifespan of about five years, which is about average for current-gen SSDs. The Pulsars began shipping to OEMs in September, so we should start seeing them pretty soon—right now, we don't have individual prices for them, although if Intel's X25-M's prices are any indication, they won't be cheap.
